As mentioned in the last blog we picked up some crab to try
and we had the store cook them. You can buy either male or female and small,
medium or large sizes. Apparently the female has a “sweeter” taste so that is
what we purchased, along with the medium size as there is not that much
differences in the sizes anyways. We bought six and gave two to Greg and Debbie
to try.
Well all I can say is there is a lot of digging for not a
lot of meat!!!
Out of the four I had, (Heather didn’t want anything to do
with them) I would not have even got a claws worth of meat from a 1 lb lobster.
The taste? Ok I guess, but for me, it is not near as tasty as lobster, plus of
course you would need 20 of them per person :)
Well our intention today was to stay, go to church and do a
few jobs on the boat. In the morning we changed our mind as the winds were to
be from the northwest for most of the day (we are heading south) and then for
the next two days it was going to blow directly from the south. Also today, we
would have a long distance to get to a suitable location as there are not many
options where we are, after this, there could be shorter days as there are more
places to stay.
As we were motoring through the river to go out the engine
started to make that terrible “clack clack” sound that I recognized from New
York, which means no water going through the exhaust. We turned off the engine,
then started it again a few seconds later but the same thing eek. I quickly got
the anchor ready to go and we started it for a few seconds to get out of the
main channel to where I could drop the anchor and check things out. Wouldn’t you know it, we anchored
directly in front of the church that we were going to go to! Anyways after some
other checks, eventually enough water started flowing through the engine to
stop the sound, but it is very unnerving. It must have been something fowling the
intake again. By the time we got this sorted out it was after 11:00 and we had
a long way to go.
The winds for the most part were not as predicted and
instead were from the south so we mostly motor sailed to make good time as we
had no time to spare. It is getting dark before 7:00 now. The engine worked
fine for the rest of the day, at times we would try just sailing but we were
not going fast enough to arrive at Smith Creek before dark. We finally did
arrive and anchor in a beautiful cove with just one other boat at 6:00 PM :)
Looking back we should have gone with our original plans!!!
We picked up some Swordfish yesterday and tonight we grilled
it on the BBQ for supper, it was topped with the “Old Bay seasoning that
everybody uses here - it was yummy.
As a side note, our timings are different than Greg and
Debbie’s, we prefer to spend a bit more time in certain spots and make the trip
down south more of an adventure. They on the other hand, want to be in Florida
and ready to cross by Dec 1 so they are on a tighter time schedule, so we have
decided to travel separately but will hopefully get together sometime in the
future.
Next time take a beer bottle and roll the legs out to get the meat....I see you got the oily pliers....what is missing is the greasy hammer. Good use of the marlin spike. When the head lamp is on the shirt must be off...you know the rules.
