Rhode River

Well we had a great couple of days in Annapolis, did some sight seeing and met a few other Canadians who are travelling south. The Annapolis boat show starts in a week or so and many boats have arrived to stay for the show. However many of the moorings will not be available as they bring in a bunch of floating docks for the “show boats” which take up this area we are in. We are just happy to “get out of Dodge” as it will be a zoo here shortly. Apparently when the show is over there is a mass exodus of boats heading south so it will be good to get a bit ahead of it!
Enclosed are some pictures of Annapolis, note the amount of boats jammed into a small area.
We left late morning as we only had 12 nm to go to Rhode River where we are staying tonight.
The sailboat we are passing in this picture is part of the “Chesapeake Bay Foundation” and its mission seems to be to save the natural beauty of the bay, I decided not to empty our holding tank in the water when passing them :)
Also pictured is another one of the amazing lighthouses that they have down here.
As we were leaving Annapolis harbour there was a race going on with some J80 sailboats, they were out further and going one way, us the other. All of a sudden they were turning and coming toward us with spinnakers flying, eek! I put on the motor and was just able to stay in front of them with the engine on full, those things fly!
We arrived in a very nice anchorage without running over any of the numerous traps coming into the harbour.
Here are some pictures where we are, do you see anything wrong with them??? (besides the ugly powerboats...)
The smart ones among you will have noticed there are no housing or other developments around!!! The Smithsonian Environment Research Center owns 3000 acres here and uses it for research studies – a nice change, of course if you look to the other side of the bay there are lots of houses, so we will not be looking in that direction for the night….
We are however on approach to a major airport, oh well, it just reminds me of the work that I don’t have to do any more (sorry Greg!)
